Joan Mervyn Hussey est une figure importante de l'école byzantiniste anglaise. De sa thèse Church and Learning in the Byzantine Empire 867-1185, parue en 1937, à son dernier ouvrage The Orthodox Church in the Byzantine Empire, paru en 1986, en passant par sa traduction anglaise de l'Histoire de l'État byzantin de G. Ostrogorsky, elle a marqué, tant par ses publications que par son enseignement universitaire (à Manchester, puis à Londres), des générations de chercheurs anglais, sans négliger les relations avec le byzantinisme international. L'hommage qui lui est ici rendu sous un titre évocateur est tout à fait justifié. |
