In 1989 the collapse of the Berlin Wall opened the way to the reunification of Germany, followed by the reunification of Europe as a whole. Since then, the top political priority for the EPP-ED Group has been the enlargement of the European Union to embrace the young democracies of Central and Eastern Europe, together with Cyprus and Malta. We are therefore delighted to welcome ten new Member States into our European family. This new accession process, unique in the history of the European Union because of the number of applicant countries and the size of their populations, will bring European peoples together again and reunite them in peace, freedom, the rule of law and prosperity. The process of enlargement was officially launched at the European Council in Copenhagen in June 1993, following a decision to encourage the countries of Central and Eastern Europe to aspire to join the European Union. Almost ten years later, on 13 December 2002, the European Council, in the same city, completed the accession negotiations with ten applicant countries (Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Cyprus and Malta), which will sign the accession treaties on 16 April 2003 in Athens.
